What are the disadvantages of PDAs?

As suprising as it may seems, PDAs also have disadvantages. In the health sector, as we all know everything has to be done accuratly and quickly. PDAs become a risk when we think of the impact that they will cause if they get damage. The question is now how much should we rely on technology? As they are a hudge advantage they can also carry a lot of risks.

Another disadvantage for organizations with the use of PDAs is the fact that these devices can be used on a professional and personal basis, organizations can not control what use is being made of the information outside the work areas.

The main risks to organizations relate the issues of security and control. A lot of specialists have address this issue.

What are the advantages of PDAs for organizations?

Today's PDAs are becoming more and more essential tools for organizations. For managers who travel a lot, instead of carrying laptops they now carry a compact small device that allows them to do everything in one. In addition, they can carry their PDA in their pocket.

Another main advantage for organizations is that with the use of PDAs, managers, employees, CEOs, and everyone who has to work with information have it ready to use on their device. Because a lot of information can be kept on a PDA, people can now keep crucial information on them, and they are able to use it anytime and anywhere in the world, as soon as needed.

PDAs allow one to communicate directly to someone enebled by infrared signals. For organizations to be efficient and effective time must not be a constraint and PDAs allows instant communication.

As for the health sector, PDAs are becoming increasingly a must for people working in the area. New softwares that can be installed on PDAs allow the tracking of patients, writing prescriptions, doing research on specific drugs, consulting files etc. However, as it will be discussed in the next section, for the health sector, PDAs also carry disadvantages.

PDAs replacing other technologies

Some PDAs are now equiped with USB ports which is very useful because it enebles someone to work on documents, share pictures and use any other items saved on a usb stick. It facilitates that task a lot by replacing the obligation of using a computer. Most new PDAs have the option now to have, like in a desktop computer, Microsoft Office. By having all those tools to our disposition, we can practically work on everything from a small PDA. The most recent PDAs are also equiped now with GPSs. We have known the use pf GPSs in cars, now we don't need to drive a car anymore to use a GPS since some new PDAs have that option.

Here's an example of a PDA equiped with a GPS

With memory cards, windows mobile, and all the tools available on a desktop computer, with a PDA containing all those options, it almost replaces the need of using a computer to do anything. With high speed internet available almost everywhere, one can navigate on any websites, anytime. Today, we can even use PDAs to watch tv and listen to radio.

Here's an example of a PDA that has the option to listen to 18 FM stations.

LG, a leader company in electronics has created a PDA with a GPS and a TV option. It is very compact and in addition of those options it carries all the other ones like windows mobile, internet etc.

Here's a picture:

Finally, among all those tools putted together in a single device, new PDAs eneble us to listen to music by being equiped with MP3 players, and to take high quality pictures and videos. The Palm Zire 31 is a PDA that allows us to download as thousands of songs with memory cards. Take a look a the picture below.
